Frequently Asked Questions

Notarization can feel confusing if you’re unfamiliar with the process — but I’m here to make it simple.

Below are answers to the most common questions I receive about notary services, what to expect during an appointment, and how to prepare. If your question isn’t listed, feel free to reach out directly!

FAQ 1

What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is an official appointed by the state to serve as an impartial witness when important documents are signed. Their role is to help prevent fraud and ensure that signers are who they say they are.

FAQ 2

Why are documents notarized?

Documents are notarized to verify the identity of the signer and ensure they are signing willingly and knowingly. This process adds an extra layer of authenticity and is often required for legal, financial, or medical documents.

FAQ 3

What forms of ID do Notary Publics accept?

Accepted IDs must be government-issued, current or issued within the last 5 years, and include a photo, physical description, and signature. Common examples:

  • California driver’s license or ID

  • U.S. or foreign passport

  • U.S. military ID

  • Inmate ID issued by a California state correctional facility

FAQ 4

May any document be notarized?

Most documents can be notarized as long as they’re complete, original (not a blank or unsigned template), and the signer is present with valid ID. Some documents may require specific wording or legal review before notarization.

FAQ 5

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Bring your completed document (but don’t sign it in advance) and a valid ID as listed above. If your document requires witnesses, please check in advance or bring them with you.

FAQ 6

What types of documents can you notarize?

  • Power of Attorney

  • Advanced Healthcare Directives

  • Trusts, Wills - please note: I do not offer legal advice or draft documents. I highly recommend they be prepared by a licensed attorney.

  • Parental permission forms

  • Business agreements

Note: I do not handle real estate loan closings, as I am not a Notary Signing Agent.

FAQ 7

Does a notarized document make the document true or legal?

No. Notarization only verifies the identity of the signer and that they signed willingly. It does not validate the content of the document or make it legally binding.

FAQ 8

Does a notarized document make the document true or legal?

No. Notarization only verifies the identity of the signer and that they signed willingly. It does not validate the content of the document or make it legally binding.

FAQ 9

Can you tell me which notarization I need (e.g., Acknowledgment or Jurat)?

Unfortunately, no. I cannot advise which notarial act is appropriate. You must know the type of notarization required before our appointment. If unsure, please ask the organization that gave you the document or consult a lawyer.
